Second Person WTF?

It is suddenly very quiet and you notice that the others are all standing away and that you have been left holding the shortest twig; left holding the rope.

Beyond the doorway at your back kneels an old man; an old man in a gray hood bent on the icy stones. On each of his arms grip the ham-fists of two of the biggest brutes your captain could find alive after the men on the field had finally brought this old hooded man down; his hidden blade broken in the frozen dust. The armored knights manage to restrain his body but his presence pervades the room and you cannot help but to shiver as you turn fully to face him, the rope almost slipping through fingers numb inside mail and leather.

The Assassin may have been on his knees but to you he seems a giant and for the first time in your albeit short career with the Knighthood you feel in your very soul the plight of the pigeon or the hare or the minnow.

Assassin; your enemy... You try to feel superior to the kneeling man but the shadow over his eyes stops your pitiful charade before you can even posture. You try to hate him but you find that you can only manage a kind of paralyzing awe-

a prey response...

Respect. The prey must respect the predator. The Prey was designed by God to avoid being caught and killed. They Predator designed by God to catch and kill.

And so you shudder and you try not to watch his mouth curl up at the corner with the scar as you approach with the rope stretched between your shaking hands. He offers his wrists without a struggle and even though you expect him to lunge at you as you begin to wind the marline between his armored wrists he does not move; remains still, staring...

Unwillingly you meet his gaze and strangely; shockingly you see not the flat, hollow eyes of a raptor bird. You see an old man's eyes; full of resolve and loneliness; of strange sights and far travels; of unearthly wonders and horrors beheld; of friends and lovers lost and mourned but never forgotten; of regrets and pride... of anger and pain-

of humanity...

Finally you see pity in his dark eyes and it is not a reflection of what you feel for him. This Assassin. This prisoner, now bound by your hand and held at the point of twenty swords; on his knees in the frozen air and marked for execution-

pities you.

As they drag him away you are left reeling for a moment, falling back amid your fellows with your hands twitching as if you can still feel the rope between your fingers.

The Assassin lets his toes trail across the stones, body limp between the Knights who haul his deadweight with grunting effort, but you know it is an act; a deliberate mockery and you feel it again.

Respect.

You follow after the crowd with your own half smile curling your mouth, to see what will now happen, because certainly this cannot be the end...
