The reason and how are up to the author. Maybe he wanted to be like Altair and chopped it off with a kitchen knife he just so happened to have at the time, maybe he chewed it off in a fit of insanity and the guys come back and see Desmond just happily sitting there bleeding all over the place eating his now no longer attached finger, or maybe his finger got bit by a radioactive flying zombie squid that's the size of a baby spider and the only way to save himself is take his hidden blade (the one that is not in his pants) and slice that baby off! I'd like sensory deprivations (so Altair doesn't know who it is) and asphyxiation (so brutal Altair goes into deaththrows) and a whole lot of shame and self disgust afterwards.

If the author!anon is willing, I'd love there to be an afterwards where Al Mualim takes Altair to a side and asks him if he is well (as the young assassin is driving himself to exhaustion each day after the attack) while keeping his hidden blade in readiness. But Altair says he was inspired to be great, nothing more, so Al Mualim lets him live.

I suddenly got this idea. There's not much privacy in the Sanctuary, right? Because I imagine its just that one room with the statues and that's it. So obviously Desmond doesn't really have much of a chance to beat off or anything in there. So after a while he just gets sick of not getting any release at all, and he goes out of the sanctuary, finds himself a nice alleyway (or anywhere really) in Monteriggioni, and just masturbates there? 10 minutes, done.
